A domain name is an address on the Internet, similar to a postcode. The computer needs a combination of letters or numbers to find certain websites on the Internet. The user of the computer enters this combination in the address bar. To simplify matters for the user, a usually meaningful text or word combination is entered in the address bar instead of a series of confusing numbers (Internet Protocol or IP address).
The beginning of the address is the protocol identifier, which tells the computer where to find the address. The second part contains the source name of the IP address, which indicates the origin of the domain. The protocol identifier and the source name are separated by a colon and two slashes.
