For some years now, Halloween has also been celebrated here in Germany. It usually involves children dressing up in scary costumes and then going out into the street to knock on houses in small groups, similar to carnival, to recite a spell and ask for a treat. If they don't get anything, they curse the house and its inhabitants, at least that's what the saying traditionally recited at the door says: "trick or treat?".

Today's custom was adopted in Germany from the USA, where it was spread through the medium of cinema and television. Although you see far fewer children actually wandering the streets in Germany, they usually limit themselves to appearing dressed up at parties, the festival is nevertheless becoming increasingly popular.

We take it for granted that we live according to a calendar, and our Gregorian calendar is now known even in areas where a different calendar actually divides the year. The Chinese, Jews, Islam and various primitive peoples have always had their own calendars, even if they have often adopted our calendar, the Gregorian calendar, for the sake of simplicity.

Everybody knows the word and has an image of it in their head, one or the other already has a picture on their skin, or is toying with the idea of having one made.

Recently, the shorter, better-sounding English word "tattoo" has become more common in German usage instead of the more cumbersome term "Tätowierung". It reflects the fact that tattooing is more than just a trend, for many it is even equated with being modern, but at least it has shed its former bad image - for now.

Wet nurses' tales are particularly common around pregnancy. Actually, the term comes from the time when wet nurses looked after the children, which was usually the case if the family was noble, or at least belonged to the better class and had domestic servants.

So it is said that the term coined itself in the 18th century, around the stories that wet nurses told their entrusted charges. It is said that they did not exactly prefer the gentle method, but chose gruesome stories to scare the children to bed.

In our western Christmas tradition, the figure of Father Christmas appears everywhere and in many different ways, but who was Father Christmas actually?

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, which took place more than 2000 years ago in Bethlehem. The Feast of the Magi, which is celebrated on 6 January, has helped to shape the tradition of gift-giving, as the wise men came to Bethlehem to honour the Christ child with presents.

The moon is the only celestial body that constantly accompanies the earth, because it orbits it and is thus omnipresent and can be perceived by us in many different forms.

A lunar calendar is created by first examining the journey through the zodiac signs and in which phase of the moon, i.e. new moon, waxing moon, full moon, waning moon, it is located.
