Test: Do you have sensitive teeth?

Sensitive teeth cause a sharp, sudden pain when you have lost a crown or the enamel has worn away. This exposes the tooth cementum that lies on the root of the tooth. Dental cementum is less hard than enamel and wears away more easily. The underlying dentin is criss-crossed with nerve endings, so when these nerve endings come into contact with food, the stinging pain occurs.
