How to get out of bed in the morning

Young man with coffee and laptop

Most people find it difficult to get up early. But it's actually only the first few minutes of waking up that you need to overcome. If you are also a morning grouch, you can get yourself going after getting up.

It is important to get your circulation going as soon as you get up. Even if you don't feel like moving after the alarm clock has rung, you should take a few minutes to do some light exercise. You should stretch your limbs to make your muscles and ligaments flexible. You can start doing this while lying down. Then it's time to stimulate your blood circulation. You can do this quickly and thoroughly with a few squats, press-ups or loose running on the spot. Just 5 to 10 minutes of light exercise is enough to wake up your body. Exercise also releases the happiness hormone serotonin in the brain, so you can start the day in a better mood.

After the light exercise, step into the shower. The flowing water helps to stimulate tired spirits. You should enjoy the shower for a few moments, but not for too long and not too hot. It is helpful to use a fragrant shower gel. Citrus oils in particular have a positive and stimulating effect on morning grouchiness.

After showering, thorough skin care is a must. The body must be well moisturised so that the skin does not feel too dry after the water. A protective and regenerating day cream is ideal for the face.

An adequate and nutritious breakfast gives you the energy you need to start the day. A cup of coffee is not only a good pick-me-up, the aromatic flavour also awakens your spirits. Eat what you like in the morning, but make sure it's not just heavy and greasy and makes your stomach sluggish. A bowl of muesli with fruit and yoghurt and a glass of orange juice is ideal.

Now all you need is some fresh air to wake you up for good. When you leave the house, take a deep breath to oxygenate your brain. Walk quickly to the bus stop or take the bike from time to time if you can. If you are travelling by car, feel free to walk around the block before getting in.

The get-up programme doesn't have to take much time at all. If you're in a hurry in the morning, 5 minutes for exercise and a quick shower is enough. You should allow just enough time for breakfast so that you don't have to scarf it down in a hurry. Prepare what you can the evening before. It's also good to wash your hair in the evening, then a quick shower in the morning is enough and you don't have to waste time drying your hair. Even if the extra quarter of an hour of sleep seems tempting, it's better to get up a few minutes earlier, because starting the day in a rush is never a good start.
