Shopping addiction, how to help yourself

Woman with shopping bags
There are people who are constantly under pressure to buy something, even if they don't need it afterwards. The impulse to buy is stronger than their own will, they are under enormous pressure.
These people suffer from shopping addiction. Shopping addiction can not only lead to financial ruin, but also to crime if the person concerned runs out of money and starts stealing.
Shopping addiction is underestimated as an illness and is not medically recognised as such.

Here are a few tips on what shopaholics or those at risk of shopaholism can do themselves to get their addictive behaviour under control.

  •     Always pay in cash. Avoid using credit cards. Return them to the bank if necessary.
  •     Only take as much cash with you as you need for your purchases that day.
  •     Write strict shopping lists and only buy what is on the list.
  •     If you like something that is not on your shopping list, sleep on the decision first. Take a day to think about it.
  •     Organise your shopping clearly. It's better to make several small purchases than large ones.
  •     Never buy online or via television.
  •     Avoid buying catalogues. Throw all catalogues or advertising brochures into the waste bin without looking at them.
  •     Go shopping at quieter times, preferably not during the sales or in the run-up to Christmas.
  •     Never buy anything under pressure.
  •     Avoid impulse purchases.
  •     Create a book in which you enter all your expenses down to the cent.
  •     Check your bank statements carefully.
  •     As long as you still have debts to pay off, only buy what you need to live, no more.
  •     Never go shopping when you're frustrated.
  •     Don't go to the supermarket hungry.
  •     If necessary, take a "supervisor" with you when you go shopping, who will rap your knuckles if you get weak.
