Special leather dyes can be used to partially or completely dye leather goods and give the leather piece a new look. Leather goods must be handled with particular care and attention when dyeing. Due to the natural structure of the leather, the dye is not absorbed in the same way everywhere. Dyeing a piece of leather is an art that often needs to be practised several times for best results.

 

Preparation of the leather

Before dyeing, the leather must be freed from its protective layer with a deglazer to make dyeing possible.

Then apply a leather cleaning agent to a soft brush and carefully pre-clean the leather.

Moisten the leather to make it more receptive to the dye.

 

Dyeing the leather

Apply the first coat of colour either with a soft cloth or a spray bottle. To do this, you need a colour that is between the natural colour of the leather and the intended final colour. A natural brown piece of leather that you want to dye black is made red during pre-dyeing in order to apply the black colour later. Make long, even strokes with a cloth; cover the entire surface evenly when applying with a spray bottle.

Dab off excess colour with a clean rag to achieve even colouring and speed up the drying process.

After the leather is completely dry, the final colour can be applied. The intermediate colour must be completely dry so that the colours do not mix.

When drying the leather after the final colour, make sure that it is nice and smooth and that the fibres can breathe so that it does not become too stiff after drying.

 

Protect leather

Polish the finished dyed and dried leather with a dry cloth to remove all excess dye.

Apply a leather protection spray to the entire surface to lock in the colour.and protect the leather from stains.

Before wearing or using, the leather spray must be completely dry.
