How do you make it easier for children to divorce their parents?

The divorce of the parents hits the children the hardest. As they try to deal with the reality, they experience many different emotions. The parents' task is to give the children stability in life so that they can cope with the divorce more quickly.

No matter how difficult it is, for the sake of the children, parents should try to handle the divorce as calmly and objectively as possible and with as few heated arguments as possible. The more protracted and difficult the divorce is, the worse it will be for the children. Ongoing conflict slows down the children's emotional healing. Both parents must try to talk openly with each other and make compromises, especially when it comes to the children's educational rights.

You should talk openly and honestly with the children about the situation and accept their anger, sadness and disappointment. Children's feelings cannot be changed, they need the support of their parents to get through it. It is particularly important that the children do not blame themselves and look for fault in themselves. If aggressive behaviour or extreme withdrawal from social life becomes apparent, a specialist should be consulted.

The fact that one parent no longer wants to have anything to do with the other has nothing to do with the children. You should therefore show respect for the ex-partner and accept that the children still like him or her just as much. Under no circumstances should you speak badly about the ex-partner in front of the children; they should not be dragged into the conflict.

Despite the huge changes in the children's lives as a result of the divorce, you must try to find a new routine as quickly as possible. The children should spend regular time with both parents. At the beginning it is difficult for the children to see their parents in different homes, but as long as there is the usual routine, i.e. dinner, homework, then bedtime, they will feel a certain stability and get used to the new life.
