If there are signs of poisoning, the vet must be called immediately. First aid measures can be taken until the vet arrives.

 

The symptoms of intoxication appear as overstimulation and nervousness or in the form of circulatory weakness, shallow breathing, impaired balance and lack of reaction to touch.

 

 

As a first aid measure for overstimulation and nervousness, the horse is given a tranquilliser (e.g. Vetranquil). The tranquilliser is dissolved in water and given into the horse's mouth using a bottle. If the horse does not swallow the tranquilliser, it can be administered into the anus. In this case, the dose is increased by half.

 

If the poisoning manifests itself as circulatory weakness, shallow breathing, loss of balance or even unconsciousness, the horse is given a circulatory stimulant. A litre of coffee is poured into the horse's mouth using a bottle. If the horse does not swallow the coffee, a stronger dose can be administered into the anus.

 

Instillation of the liquid into the anus

Insert a greased piece of garden hose about 10cm deep into the anus. Place a funnel at the other end of the hose and pour the liquid into it.
