Pregnancy in dogs can be difficult to recognise. As a responsible dog owner, you naturally want to know the signs of a possible pregnancy so that you can provide your dog with the best possible care.

 

A vet can determine whether the bitch is pregnant by means of a blood test and ultrasound, but even without a cost-intensive examination, there are some signs that dog owners can look out for themselves.

 

Signs of pregnancy in dogs

 

- Increased appetite or change in appetite. The bitch suddenly won't touch her usual favourite food or eats significantly more than before. As in humans, the hormonal fluctuations at the beginning of pregnancy influence the dog's eating habits.

- A common sign in pregnant dogs is whitish discharge from the reproductive organs.

- The teats of the pregnant bitch are enlarged.

- Changes in behaviour become noticeable: a bright dog suddenly sleeps a lot and seems tired. A well-balanced bitch can suddenly appear restless and nervous for no recognisable reason.

- If the bitch is already at an advanced stage of pregnancy, you will see a clear enlargement of the belly.

- The bitch shows signs of "nest building", she prepares herself for the care of the puppies by scratching blankets to make them fluffier. This sign can occur relatively early, when the birth of the puppies is still a few weeks away, and is merely an instinctive action.

 

If the dog owner has the feeling that his bitch is pregnant, he should have her examined by a vet. The vet will check whether the pregnancy is progressing normally and give advice on how to care for the pregnant bitch. A bitch that appears sickly and apathetic should be taken to the vet immediately.
