The care of a pigeon

Pigeon care

There are over 200 different types of pigeons, some of which are even very noble. Pigeons have been kept as pets for centuries because they are relatively easy to care for. Here are a few guidelines for keeping and caring for pigeons.

Pigeons like to perch on the floor and need a flat surface to do so. The pigeon's cage or aviary should offer sufficient space on the floor.
A pigeon needs plenty of space and a large cage in which it can stretch its wings and flap around. The cage should be out of reach of dogs and cats and covered on at least two sides. It is a good idea to place the cage against a wall. When covering the sides, make sure that there is still enough fresh air in the cage.

The bottom of the cage should be sprinkled with bird sand. A few large, flat stones can be placed on top for the pigeon to perch on.

A pigeon should have enough exercise. If the cage is not large enough, it should be allowed to fly for at least two hours a day.

A pigeon is sexually mature at the age of 5 months. This is when the cock starts building the nest. Even a single pigeon retains the instinct to build a nest and should therefore be provided with nesting material. Pigeons prefer hemispherical nests. They can be provided with nesting wool, hay or fabric as padding.

Of course, the pigeon cage must be cleaned regularly. Food that has not been eaten should be disposed of. The floor and surfaces can be cleaned with vinegar. Acetic acid kills germs and is non-toxic for birds.

Pigeon feed should contain 12 to 15% protein. Typical feedstuffs for pigeons are wheat, peas, maize, linseed, sesame, rice and oats. In addition, the pigeon is occasionally given fresh greens (lettuce, dandelion, chickweed) and vegetables (carrots or spinach. Unsalted peanuts and sunflower seeds can also be fed. The grit in bird sand is important for the birds' digestion. It is usually mineral salts or crushed shells.

Pigeons need fresh drinking water every day. Once a week you can give the pigeon some apple cider vinegar, together with plenty of fresh water. Soaked garlic strengthens the pigeons' defence system and can be fed once a week.

In addition to a balanced diet, pigeons kept indoors should be given vitamin supplements for pigeons. These are particularly important during the moulting period.
