Christmas trees vary in size. A Christmas tree should neither be sparse nor overloaded with lights. How many lights should you have per metre of tree?

Many people have about 200 to 250 candles per metre of tree height. So a tree that is one and a half metres high should have no more than about 375 candles. This rule of thumb applies to average Christmas trees, fir trees that are particularly slender should have slightly fewer lights, while very wide trees can quietly use a few more.

If you want a particularly bright Christmas tree, you can go as far as 300 candles per metre and use mainly white lights. If you vary white and coloured candles, the tree will look less garish even with many lights.

Less than 150 lights per metre of tree might seem a bit sparse. For a subtle yet effective effect, the Christmas tree should have 200 lights per metre.
