For mild itching caused by insect bites, allergic skin reactions, eczema or neurodermatitis, old household remedies can provide relief.
Itchy areas of skin can be cooled with a cold, wet flannel. A curd pack helps with inflammation, as the curd relieves swelling.
A cut, fresh onion placed directly on the affected area of skin until the itching subsides helps to relieve the itching caused by insect bites.
St John's wort and witch hazel can be applied to the skin in ointment form or as a decoction to reduce itching. Witch hazel ointment can also provide relief for itchy haemorrhoids.
Important: never use alcohol compresses for itching. Alcohol dries out the skin and can make itching worse. Avoid sweating, as this promotes itching. If possible, wear airy cotton clothing to ensure good air circulation to the skin and prevent sweating. Visits to the sauna can make itching worse, so it is better to avoid them for as long as possible.
If the itching has not improved after a week, you should see a dermatologist.
