Sick with worry

The news is full of frightening reports about what can make people ill. Yet many people worry so much about their health that they become ill as a result of these very worries.

Health concerns are mainly fuelled by the media. Nowadays, a lot of misinformation is spread about substances that cause illness, because these headlines sell. Even if the same messages are retracted the following day, the original warning sticks in the back of people's minds. Today, people are generally healthier than ever before, but surveys show that more people believe they are in poor health than before. A survey in the 1970s found that 61% of people surveyed were satisfied with their health. Ten years later, only 55% were satisfied with their health. Today, 12% of people aged between 45 and 55 believe that they are ill or sickly, even though they are still largely unaffected by the typical symptoms of old age. The reason for this is the flood of information that people are exposed to, causing confusion and anxiety.

To escape this fear, you should filter the information. In the case of new medical findings or pseudo findings, you should ask yourself a few key questions to determine the credibility or relevance of this information.

1. who published the information; is it a credible and reliable source or sensationalist press?

2. where was the study conducted; was it at a renowned university or research centre or an unknown institution that wants to make a name for itself?

3. how was the study conducted? The results obtained in animal experiments do not automatically apply to humans.

4. is the information relevant to me personally?

There are also indications in the general information of the study as to whether the results are reliable or representative.

In order to make the results of a medical study reliable, some of the test subjects were to be given placebos without their knowledge.

The study is even more credible if neither doctors nor test subjects knew who received the placebos and who received the real medication.

The test subjects should have been selected by a random generator and assigned to different groups, e.g. drug A or B, placebo.
