
Eggs contain an essential nutrient that can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by 24%.
The nutrient called choline is relatively little known. In a study, researchers compared the results of 3000 women who consumed 455mg of choline daily and found that they had significantly reduced the risk of breast cancer compared to the women who took none or little choline. The 3000 women tested took the choline mainly through eggs, coffee and skimmed milk.
The nutrient choline is found in the yolk of the egg, one egg contains about 120mg of choline and 70 calories. Just one egg a day can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 18%.
Choline is needed for cell function. Although everyone needs choline, it seems to be especially important for women of childbearing age. Besides reduced risk of breast cancer, choline also lowers the risk of heart disease and birth defects improves memory.
A cup of coffee (150ml) contains an average of 145mg of choline.
On average, one egg contains 120 to 200mg of choline.
100g of soybeans contain about 115mg of choline.
Basil, oregano, chilli, mustard seed, ginger, paprika and curry contain choline.
Tofu contains 28mg of choline per 100g.
