How do you treat a sprained foot?

Treating a sprained foot: It has happened to everyone: You twist your foot or jump the wrong way, and you've already sprained it. A sprain is noticeable through the following symptoms:
Swelling
Bluish discolouration
Severe pain
Inability to move

Treat the sprained foot immediately

A sprain can hurt more than a fracture in the first few hours. Often the injured person fears a fracture when it is "only" a sprain. Generally, if you can still move your toes, the foot is not broken.

1. The injured ankle must be rested. It sounds logical, but is often forgotten. If possible, the sprained foot should not be loaded at all. The best way to immobilise it is to splint it.

2. Rest . The affected person should not use the injured foot for a few days. If possible, you should lie or sit down a lot, but you can walk on one leg or with the help of crutches. In order not to be completely inactive, you can do light gymnastic exercises or swim with a sprained foot.

3. Ice cream . Cool the sprained ankle with ice or an ice-cold gel pack several times a day for 15-20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling. Do NOT cool the foot for more than 20 minutes.

4. Pressure bandage . A pressure bandage is not absolutely necessary, but is advisable whenever the foot is not elevated. A light bandage, not wrapped too tightly so as not to cut off circulation, is sufficient.

5. Put up foot . Elevating the sprained foot minimises swelling. It is important to place the affected leg comfortably, so elevate the foot on pillows.

6. Go to the doctor . Most sprains are relatively harmless and heal on their own. However, if the pain does not subside and the foot does not get better, it is advisable to see a doctor as it may be a more serious injury.
