How to stimulate milk production

Infant sleeps

Although there are no special formulas to stimulate milk production when a breastfeeding mother does not have enough to feed her baby, there are things that can be done to stimulate the breast to produce more milk.

The most important thing is that the baby drinks properly, i.e. sucks effectively, drinks often and for a long time. The more milk the baby sucks, the more the body will produce.

Breastfeeding mothers must make sure they drink enough fluids. You don't necessarily have to drink a lot of milk, juice, tea and water are also good. The mother should also drink more than she is thirsty for, as thirst alone is often not enough to indicate the fluid balance. Simply drink a glass of water every now and then, especially directly after breastfeeding.

On average, a breastfeeding mother needs around 500 calories more per day than normal. Too little food intake during breastfeeding can have a negative effect on milk production. The body becomes tired and does not have enough energy to ensure sufficient milk production.

Stress is a negative factor for milk production. The breastfeeding mother should rest and relax a lot.

Caffeine and beer are said to have a stimulating effect on the production of breast milk. However, caffeine and alcohol pass into breast milk and are absorbed by the baby. Babies often reject the taste of breast milk containing alcohol and drink less. Caffeine can keep the baby awake and disrupt its sleep rhythm, which may also affect its appetite.

Summary: The best recipe for adequate milk supply for the breastfeeding mother is frequent and effective breastfeeding (or expressing milk), sufficient fluid intake and calories, adequate sleep and low stress.
