Intertrigo, skin wolf or simply skin rash is a common problem in babies. The rash is reddish and usually develops in the folds of the neck, but also under the arms and on the belly. The rash is not dangerous and can usually be treated at home.
Treatment of rash on the neck in babies
Wash the baby thoroughly at the folds of the neck during the daily bath. Then pat the neck dry well. If there are many small bubbles, you can sprinkle a little baby powder into the folds of the neck. If the skin appears dry and cracked, it is better to apply a good nappy cream, preferably several times a day.
During the day, make sure that the affected areas remain clean and dry. This usually proves to be somewhat difficult, as the baby cannot yet hold the neck upright. The baby should also not be dressed excessively warmly so that it does not sweat under its clothes and cause friction.
If possible, often hold or lay the baby in such a way that the neck opens and air can get to it.
Prevention of skin rash in babies
If possible, always keep the baby's neck dry and clean. When bathing, gently bend the head back and thoroughly rinse the folds of the neck clean. After bathing, pat the neck dry.
During breastfeeding or feeding, place a bib tightly around the neck to prevent the milk from running under the chin and down the neck.
Most babies get a rash around the neck in the first months of life. It is not a sign of poor hygiene or carelessness. Because underweight babies have fewer folds of fat on their necks, they rarely get neck rash. So if your baby has neck rash, at least he or she is well nourished.
Important: The rash must be kept under observation, because the open cracks or blisters can cause an infection. If the rash spreads, smells bad or the baby gets a fever, you should definitely go to the paediatrician.
