A proper shopping trip for the upcoming baby is fun, but it's all too easy to be tempted to buy superfluous things for the baby. Everyone wants the best for the baby, the safest and cutest baby items. But babies don't need as much as you think, and some items should even be avoided.
Extravagant cot accessories should be avoided because they are not necessarily safe. It is recommended to remove pillows, brake blocks, duvets and soft toys, anything that is soft from the cradle. In the first few months of the baby's life, there is a risk that his face will get under the soft objects in the crib during sleep and the baby will not get enough oxygen.
When buying clothes for your baby, it is important that they are comfortable. There are many expensive items of clothing that are not particularly comfortable for the baby to wear. A newborn needs comfortable clothes that are not too tight and do not have elasticated cuffs. The clothes should be made of cotton so that the skin can breathe. Unlike many synthetic materials, cotton is soft on baby's sensitive skin.
In my opinion, a changing table and a warmer for the baby wipes is a waste of money. When changing the baby's nappy, it is usually more convenient to spread a blanket or other soft and washable surface on the floor, bed or chest of drawers. The bed or the floor are the safest places to change the baby when the baby starts to roll. The warmer for baby wipes can remove moisture from them. Normal room temperature is perfectly adequate.
A baby scale is another unnecessary device. Regular weight gain checks at the paediatrician are sufficient in most cases.
It is also unnecessary to buy special baby detergent for baby clothes. The main difference to "normal" detergent is the odour. If the baby shows allergic reactions when wearing the clothes, you can always look for alternatives or wash the clothes in very little soap or just hot water.
