Making ice cube boats yourself causes extremely little waste and is therefore not only good for the environment but also for the wallet. The children enjoy making the boats and learning how water forms into ice. They can float the finished boats in a bowl or stream and keep track of them until the ice has melted.

 

Pour a little water into the desired containers, small round bowls are ideal. Place the containers in the freezer for about half an hour. Make sure they are standing up straight so that the water freezes evenly. When the water has frozen a little, you can put a toothpick in the middle for each boat. As the water is slightly frozen, the toothpicks are easy to put in and do not fall over.

Put the bowls with the toothpicks back in the freezer until the water is frozen hard.
To get the ice out of the containers easily, moisten them lightly with water from below.

The sails are made by cutting squares of paper, folding them around the toothpicks and gluing them in place. You can paint the sails as you like before gluing them down.
