Everyone needs sleep to stay healthy. The body needs a certain amount of sleep to regenerate, which is much higher in growing children than in adults. However, some children find it difficult to fall asleep.

There are various techniques that can help children to fall asleep. It is important for parents not to give their children chocolate or other sweets before bedtime. Chocolate contains caffeine, only in small amounts, but enough to keep a child with problems falling asleep awake. Sugar gives the body an energy boost, which makes it difficult for the child to find rest and sleep.

A fixed sleep routine should be maintained so that the body gets used to being tired at certain times.

Children should sleep in their own bed and not eat, watch TV or do homework in bed. The body learns that the bed is for sleeping and automatically shuts down when you lie down in bed. If you use the bed for other, active things, the body may find it harder to fall asleep.

If you find it difficult to fall asleep in the evening, you should refrain from taking an afternoon nap. Most children no longer need a regular nap from the age of 3. An unneeded nap can disrupt the entire sleep rhythm. The child has difficulty falling asleep in the evening and does not wake up early enough in the morning due to going to sleep late.

Soft, calming music helps many children to fall asleep. The music calms the senses and relaxes, and those who are relaxed can fall asleep more easily. If you like, you can do a few relaxing yoga exercises before going to bed. Dim the lights during the exercises and breathe deeply. The exercises slow down the heartbeat, relax the muscles and make it easier to fall asleep.
