Homemade cakes and edible Easter decorations bring Easter into the home and are a great gift idea. The children can also help with the preparations.
Easter tartlets
The small muffin-like cupcakes are no bigger than a coffee cup and therefore the ideal size for children. You can make simple sand cake or marble cake dough and bake small cupcakes or muffins in special moulds, which are then decorated for Easter. The surface can be coated with yellow or white icing. The children can use sweets and other sweets to create the face of an Easter bunny or a chick. Bacon mice can make the Easter bunny's ears, Smarties the eyes and nose. Two small, white sweets make the bunny's front teeth. Use thin liquorice to make the whiskers. For the chick, cut an orange slice of sweet into two equal parts and place them as eyes. The cake can also have green icing as grass with jelly beans as Easter eggs. A strip of liquorice shaped as a handle makes the cake look like an Easter basket.
Easter nests
Even younger children can help put together the Easter nest. Mix melted chocolate chips and grated coconut in equal parts. Place small round pieces of the mixture on baking paper and, while it is still warm, use a tablespoon to make a dent in the centre for the nest. Once the nests have cooled, you can fill them with sugar eggs as desired.
Eggs made from ice cream
You can make the faces of Easter bunnies or chicks using different coloured ice cream. For a chick, start with a large spoonful of yellow ice cream for the body of the chick. A small spoonful for the head. Orange slice sweets make the eyes and beak, chocolate chips for the feet.
The Easter bunny can have a light vanilla or pink strawberry ice cream body. Cat's tongues make good bunny ears, jelly fruit, Smarties and liquorice make the rest of the face.
Easter bunny cake
You need two round cakes for the Easter bunny face. One whole, round cake is the face. Cut two long, oval bunny ears from the other cake and place them on the head. Coat everything with icing and sprinkle with a thin layer of grated coconut so that it looks like fur. The eyes, nose and whiskers are made from Smarties, jelly fruit and liquorice as described above.
Ordinary egg-shaped desserts
Any type of pudding or biscuit can be laid out and decorated like an Easter egg as an Easter decoration. A layer of icing and a few colourful sweets on top give it an Easter look.
