How to cook the perfect hard-boiled egg

Hard-boiled eggs

Boiling an egg sounds easy, but they are usually too soft or have a greyish layer around the yellow yolk. When the eggshell is peeled off, the egg white sticks and the egg ends up looking shredded.

With the following method, you are guaranteed to get a perfect hard-boiled egg:

Firstly, place the egg or eggs in a small pan. It doesn't matter how many eggs you want to cook. Now fill the pot with cold water until the eggs are covered but not too deep. Under no circumstances should you add salt to the water.

Now turn the hob to the highest setting and wait for the water to boil.

As soon as it starts to boil, set the timer to 3 minutes.

Once the 3 minutes are up, remove the pan from the heat, put the lid on and leave the eggs to rest in the hot water for 8 minutes.

After the 8 minutes, pour the pan out over a sieve and run cold water over the eggs for about a minute. Then leave them to rest in cold water for a while so that they cool down.

The best way to peel the eggs is to put them in the fridge for half an hour. You can then crack the shell and roll the eggs back and forth briefly, which loosens the shell from the egg white and makes it easier to remove the shell.
