
In the Middle Ages, merchants used to boil the water out of the wine so that it would take up less space during transport by sea and last longer. It also saved on taxes, as these were charged by volume. One day, a bold sailor decided to simply skip the reverse of this process and sold brandy instead of wine, as the product had improved in flavour through storage in wooden barrels and distillation.
