There are a lot of healthy foods with relatively few calories. Everyone knows that healthy foods contain essential minerals, vitamins, trace elements, fibre, antioxidants and so on. These are seven of the healthiest foods that everyone should eat more of.
Kale
Kale is one of the most vitamin A-rich vegetables there is. It also contains numerous cancer-fighting antioxidants, fibre and almost as much vitamin C as an orange. Kale is good for the eyes, makes the skin beautiful and strengthens the immune system.
Sardines
Sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are healthy for the heart and boost your mood. They are also full of vitamin D. As sardines are very low on the food chain, they contain far fewer toxins than larger fish.
Pomegranate
Pomegranates are full of antioxidants that fight free radicals. Free radicals damage tissue and contribute to the development of cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer's, among others. A glass of pomegranate juice a day has only about 150 calories and is incredibly refreshing.
Oatmeal
Eating more oatmeal is particularly recommended if you have high cholesterol, as the fibre contained in oatmeal lowers LDL cholesterol in the blood. Slow-release carbohydrates such as oatmeal help to burn fat more effectively if eaten around three hours before exercise.
Quinoa
Quinoa or Andean millet is full of fibre and protein, and is not only very healthy, but also keeps you full for several hours.
Kefir
The fermented milk drink contains probiotic cultures that strengthen the immune system. A quarter of a litre of kefir provides the body with 30% of the daily requirement of calcium.
Lenses
Lentils are versatile and inexpensive. Just half a cup of lentils contains around 9 grams of protein and 8 grams of fibre, and lentils are also a valuable source of iron and folic acid.
