An accidental invention by an 11-year-old boy, which was only recognised 18 years later.

 

In 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson tried to make lemonade by mixing sherbet powder with water. This was a popular refreshing drink at the time. However, he left his lemonade on the veranda. The temperature dropped below freezing overnight. So when Frank stepped out onto the veranda the next morning, he found his lemonade, with the stirrer still in it, frozen.

 

However, it was another 18 years before Frank Epperson patented this invention and marketed it in several flavours. He originally called his creation "Eppsicle", which later became "Popsicle".
