First of all, you need to determine whether it is normal dandruff or a scalp dandruff disorder. Scalp dandruff is characterised by shiny and unevenly sized white particles. It usually affects people with oily scalps.
In the case of dry scalp, fine and uniformly sized skin particles detach from the scalp.
If you're not sure what type of dandruff you have, it's best to go to the pharmacy, as they can usually tell with the naked eye whether you suffer from oily or dry scalp.
Dandruff can usually be controlled with the right shampoo. It is essential to use the right hair shampoo. Shampoos for oily scalps not only combat the oil content of the skin, but also kill the yeast fungus Pityrosporum ovale, which colonises the very oily scalp. If you use a shampoo with a strong degreasing effect on a scalp that is already too dry, it will dry out further and dandruff will increase. In this case, use a mild hair shampoo specifically for dry scalps.
If you suffer from a dry scalp, it helps to wash your hair less frequently. The situation is different for oily scalps, in which case you need to wash your hair daily. You can alternate between an anti-dandruff shampoo and a shampoo for oily hair.
If you find that you can't get your dandruff problem under control despite using the right scalp care, it makes sense to see a dermatologist. It could also be a disease such as psoriasis, rosacea, neurodermatitis or eczema.
