A cat's mentality is not geared towards learning through discipline and strictness. Punishments usually have the opposite effect, because the cat is not able to change its learning behaviour as a result of such a negative experience. If a cat is punished when it does not want to do as it is told, it will feel stressed and may even develop behavioural problems. Training and retraining a cat requires patience, understanding and positive reinforcement.
Reward instead of punishment. As soon as the cat does what you want, it should be given a small reward morsel. However, in order for the cat to understand why it is being rewarded, it should learn to associate the correct command with a sound that is followed by the reward. In other words: always have a pen in your pocket. When the cat does something well, make a clicking sound with the pen and then give it the reward.
