How to wash mouldy hay

Wash hay

If hay becomes damp due to incorrect storage, it can become mouldy. Mouldy hay can be harmful to the health of the animals that eat it. Mould in hay can damage the respiratory tract and lead to chronic diseases. If you follow the instructions exactly, mouldy hay can be reused for feeding after cleaning.

1. spread out the hay on a clean tarpaulin on level ground.

 

2. lay out the mouldy hay evenly on the tarpaulin no higher than 15 cm.

 

3. spray all mouldy parts of the hay with a water hose. The water hose should have a spray gun attached so that the water washes evenly. Use the water to wash out all visible parts of the mould. The mould that is not rinsed off by the water pressure should be loosened by hand and rinsed off.

 

4 Remove the wet hay from the plastic sheeting and place it in the sun to dry in the fresh air. Leave to dry for about three to five hours.

 

5 Once the mould has been removed, the hay should be fed within three days. If it is left longer, the mould can return and ruin the hay completely.
