An aquarium can be a true underwater paradise of exotic plants and fish. With these tips, you can make the most of your fish tank.
Freshwater aquariums are generally easier to maintain than saltwater tanks, as freshwater needs to be changed less frequently to keep it clean. Ideally, the water should be changed every two to three weeks by draining a third of the water from the tank and replacing it with clean, temperature-controlled water. Changing the water too frequently can be too much of a shock for the aquatic inhabitants.
If you prefer a saltwater aquarium despite the work, because you can introduce more exotic fish there, you should change a third of the water every week and replace it with new saltwater.
Don't just put fish together at random. When choosing fish, it is best to seek advice from a specialist retailer so that the fish species can live together peacefully. Sailfin, red neon and Sumatran barb go well together. For saltwater aquariums, clownfish, monkfish and yellow sea bass are a good choice, as they all originate from the Indian Pacific and have beautiful colours.
The underwater world looks particularly beautiful with natural accessories. Instead of plastic decorations, use natural wood or stones. Boil wood and stones in water and leave to cool before placing them in the aquarium. Wood is a less suitable type of decoration for salt water because it rots more quickly. Instead, use real coral stones, which not only look beautiful, but also act as a bacterial filter with their pores.
The aquatic plants must also be chosen carefully. Java fern and anubia look beautiful and help to regulate the pH value.
For both types of aquarium, it is advisable to install energy-saving LED lighting systems that imitate natural sunlight and moonlight.
To prevent algae infestation, the tank should not be in direct sunlight. The panes can be cleaned well with a magnetic wiper.
As a general rule, you should not catch fish yourself and put them in the aquarium, but rather use bred fish.
Do not feed too much. Excess food sinks to the bottom, rots and contaminates the water.
