Cat litter trays naturally start to smell after a while, even if they are changed frequently. Here are some simple tips on how to stop litter tray odour without spending a lot of money.

Once the smelly liquids get stuck in the plastic base of the litter tray, it is quite impossible to remove them completely. You should therefore protect a new litter tray from urine being absorbed by the plastic. To do this, simply cut out a piece of strong cardboard the same size as the base and cover the cardboard on both sides with aluminium foil. Tape the ends of the foil with adhesive tape. The next time you clean the floor, you can simply wipe the foil clean with a sponge and a vinegar solution. If you use enough cat litter, the foil protection will last a few times before you need a new one.

You can refresh the corner where the litter tray is located with a fresh lemon. Place a small plate with a sliced lemon near the litter tray. The lemon juice neutralises odours. However, the lemon must not be placed directly next to the toilet, otherwise the cat will no longer want to use it, as cats do not like the smell of citrus.

For a thorough cleaning of the litter tray, you can mix a solution of vinegar and lemon oil with water, with a little household bleach if necessary. Use this to rinse the plastic parts of the toilet and then rub them dry thoroughly.

To prevent your cat from spreading the litter all over the floor with its paws when it leaves the toilet, place an old piece of carpet or a mat on the floor as a doormat.
