Although fish need far less attention than dogs or cats, there are also more and less sensitive species among aquarium inhabitants. As an aquarium beginner, it is better to choose easy-care fish that are more resistant to fluctuations in the water conditions in the aquarium. 

Cold-water fish

As the name suggests, coldwater fish adapt to the temperature in the fish tank and are therefore much easier to keep for the aquarium novice. Goldfish are among the most popular cold-water fish. As a beginner, you should not choose exotic goldfish species, but limit yourself to the "normal" goldfish. Other easy-to-care-for cold-water fish are tetras, danios and loaches.

Tropical fish

Tropical fish include easy-care species such as guppies, carlings and barbs. These species are generally hardy and healthy and require little care. 

An aquarium beginner should avoid a saltwater tank. Even though saltwater fish are colourful and exotic, they are far more complicated to care for and more expensive.

Easy-care aquarium for beginners

The basic equipment for a simple aquarium with healthy fish should consist of a fish tank with a capacity of at least 70 litres, an aquarium lamp and a pump with filter system. A heating rod is not necessary for cold-water fish.

Before filling and decorating the fish tank, you should consider the location carefully. The aquarium should not be placed in direct sunlight, as this can affect the water temperature. Even though cold-water fish do not need a heated tank, the water temperature should be kept constant. 

The bottom of the fish tank should be equipped with stones and a hiding place for the fish. 

Feeding the fish

Cold-water fish only need a pinch of fish food once or twice a day. Be careful not to overfeed: uneaten food sinks to the bottom and contaminates the water.
