Discoloured and painful fingernails or toenails are often a sign of a fungal infection (onychomicosis). The nails thicken, smell bad, become scaly and cause discomfort. Nail fungus is caused by bacteria in the nail bed that enter the nail through cracks in the skin. Moisture accelerates the growth of the bacteria and allows the nail fungus to spread quickly.

The pulse rate is therefore a good indicator of a person's state of health. Many people, especially women, complain in winter about swollen fingers or toes, pain in the knuckles associated with itching, stiffness and restricted movement of the fingers, redness and small oedemas in the finger joints. Warming up the hands often increases the symptoms, as the blood supply to the affected areas increases.
