Romania is becoming increasingly popular as a holiday destination, but many things are different from Germany. When on holiday in Romania, you should be wary of the following dangers:

 

Driving in the dark. After sunset, there are agricultural vehicles, herds of sheep and cows on their way home on many roads in Romania that are completely unlit and difficult to see. It is also common for cars to be parked on blind bends without lights. It is therefore better to make sure you arrive at your destination in good time to avoid driving in the dark.

Cheers as a toast. The word "cheers" means "stupid" or "idiot" in Romanian and is taken as an insult. So if you want to toast while drinking, you should either say "Prosit" or, even better, use the Romanian toast "Noroc" (happiness).

Photographing Roma. It is generally impolite to simply photograph strangers like a tourist attraction. If you still want to take photos of Roma people, you should ask them beforehand. If you don't ask them and simply take photos, they often get angry because some Roma believe that a camera robs them of their soul.

Mountain hikes alone. Many mountain trails in Romania are very lonely and remote. That's why you should never go on a mountain hike alone, because in the event of an accident, help will not come so quickly. Even a mobile phone is of little use if you are knocked unconscious in an accident. It is better to go on mountain tours at least in pairs or join another hiking group and let someone know where you want to go.

Leave glasses half full. Romanians drink to the health of the living and the soul of the deceased. It is therefore considered impolite to leave a half-empty glass. This custom is particularly prevalent in rural areas, whereas people in big cities have become more relaxed.

Hectic pace. Anyone travelling to Romania needs to bring time with them. A hectic pace is met with a lack of understanding here. Romanians are hospitable people and appreciate it when their country is admired in peace.
