Madrid Safari Park

Emu About 50 kilometres outside the city of Madrid in Aldea del Fresno is a safari park with the simple name "Safari Madrid".

I wouldn't recommend the Safari Park for tourists who are only in Madrid for a limited time, but it is a very nice place to visit with children.

So if you live in the Madrid area or are on a longer holiday in Madrid, you can take a great day trip to the Safari Park.

Attention: The Safari Park Madrid looks run-down at first glance due to the faded signs and peeling paint. If you as a visitor can look past this, you will have a lot of fun experiencing the animals up close.

Children love the petting zoo at the start of the safari park and can stroke and run around with goats, pigs and deer. In addition to the petting zoo, there is also a pony riding track (1 round €1 per child).

Every day at 1 pm on weekdays, there is a flight show with birds of prey (Rapaces) that is well worth seeing. At weekends in spring, the flight show also takes place at 5 pm, in summer at 6 pm.

There is a snake show (Serpientes) at 2 pm and at 6 pm on weekends in spring, and at 7 pm in summer.

The 'recorrido' begins behind the petting zoo, where you drive slowly past wild animals such as zebras, ostriches, bison, rhinos and many more. You can stop at will and wait until the animals come to the window and beg for food. There are also lions and tigers in the safari park, which are of course in fenced enclosures.

In the 'Quinta sección' with the rhinos and hippos, you are not allowed to stop the car for safety reasons, but you can get very close to the animals even in a slow-moving car.

There is also an Insectario with spiders, scorpions and butterflies, a Reptilario with turtles and snakes and a crocodile enclosure.

The official website of the park (www.safarimadrid.com) quotes an admission price of €13 for adults and €9 for children. We paid €13.50 per adult and our 2-year-old son was free.

If you have the choice between the Safari Park Madrid and the Zoo Madrid, you should definitely choose the Safari Park.
