South of the equator there are hundreds of archaeological sites that are open to tourists. These are the four most interesting cultural sites.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is the archaeological ruin of an Inca city. It is located on the summit of a mountain in the middle of the Andes in the rainforest. This site is a special example of man's adaptability to his environment and how man is able to make the most of natural conditions. Here are the remains of architectural constructions that provide comprehensive information about the Inca culture. Walls, ramps and terraces were embedded in the natural stone, revealing the advanced construction methods of the Incas.

Twyfelfontein

This archaeological site is located in the north-west of Namibia. Ancient rock paintings (petroglyphs) can be found here, which probably date back to the Stone Age. The depictions show animals, cultural ceremonies and ancient symbols. With over 2000 rock paintings, Twyfelfontein was declared a national monument in 1952 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

Rapa Nui, the Easter Island

Raps Hui is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and is one of the most remote islands in the world. Despite its isolation, the island has been inhabited for almost 1500 years. The most famous feature of the island are the large monoliths (moai), which are a memorial to the ancestors. The entire island is a national park and therefore accessible to tourists.

Kilwa Kisiwani

The ruins of Kiowa Kisiwani and Song Mnara are located on the East African coast in Tanzania. They were among the most important trading ports in Africa between the 9th and 19th centuries. Porcelain, precious stones, precious metals and perfumes were traded from the Far East. Due to the importance of global trade, the ruins were declared a World Heritage Site.
