The right provisions for a long car journey

On holiday by car

For many families, going on holiday by car is the cheapest way to enjoy a holiday together and get to know foreign places. It is not unimportant to take the right provisions with you on a long car journey.

The little picnic breaks along the way make a long car journey more enjoyable, especially for the driver. While it is obvious to take fast food and sweets with you on the road, the limited space in the car is not suitable for fluctuating sugar levels, especially for children. So avoid extremely fatty and sugary snacks. Without sufficient opportunity to move, such foods cause irritability and bloating.

Good snacks for car journeys are cheese sticks, fruit bars, bananas, pretzels, trail mix and muesli bars. If you like, you can take fresh carrots and celery with you and chew on them during the journey. The basic rule is to take as healthy but tasty food as possible, because if you feel good physically, you will travel more comfortably and in a better mood.

One should not forget the daily main meal. It is part of the holiday experience to try out the local bistros. So at lunchtime or to end the day, stop for a proper meal.

For the second main meal, sandwiches and wraps should be prepared. For sandwiches with sausage or meat, make sure they are sufficiently chilled. Wrap the sandwiches or wraps well in plastic or greaseproof paper so that they do not get soggy. It is best to put a napkin on your lap when eating in the car so that the car is not covered in crumbs.

Drinking on the road in the car is of course very important. Water is the best way to quench thirst and keep the body well hydrated. It is good to keep a water bottle handy for each passenger, especially of course for the driver. Soft drinks such as cola and lemonade should be avoided. If you want to drink something other than water between meals, you should choose orange juice or milk drinks. These should of course be well chilled.

It is pleasant for the driver to have a thermos flask with hot tea or coffee.

If you are travelling in warm temperatures, you should take a cool bag with you and store the food in the boot or footwell, where the car stays cooler.

Don't forget to take a plastic bag for your rubbish so that you don't leave your rubbish lying around at the rest areas.
