Some destinations can blow the budget very quickly. If you plan carefully, you can control your travel budget and still experience a lot. Here are the most expensive cities in the world with money-saving tips.
London
London's main attractions such as the London Eye, Parliament and Westminster Abbey are quite expensive. However, you can visit the National History Museum, Tate Modern and Tate Britain and the British Museum for free. Another worthwhile destination for the budget-conscious are the numerous city parks, which are maintained by the Royal Parks Agency.
Even in London there are cheap places to stay. Although you have to do without a lot for a low price, many hostels offer inexpensive accommodation.
As in almost all big cities, the best way to get anywhere is by underground. It is best to plan your destinations well in advance and visit the sights that are close to each other on the same day.
Paris
Parisian restaurants can be expensive. Although the romance of a restaurant can't be compared to anything else, there are plenty of bistros in Paris with take-away meals for those who want to watch their wallet.
New York
Visitors to New York are also advised to buy from the numerous food stalls rather than in a restaurant.
If you like art, you should visit the popular MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) on Fridays between 4pm and 8pm, when admission is free. The Guggenheim allows visitors to set their own admission price on Saturdays between 5.45pm and 7.45pm.
Hong Kong
Many museums in the otherwise very expensive city of Hong Kong are free on Wednesdays. The Hong Kong Zoo and the Botanical Gardens are also always free.
An inexpensive way to visit the city is by ferry; the Star Ferry costs less than one euro.
Sydney
The most famous sights in Sydney are the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Both can be visited free of charge.
Singapore
You can save a lot of money on accommodation in Singspur. Airbnb's are much cheaper than hotels and usually more spacious. You can eat cheaply in Chinatown, Arab Street and Little India. As the city is not particularly large, you can walk almost everywhere.
Moscow
In Moscow, you should visit the free sights such as Red Square and Pobedy Park as well as the Chram Christa Spasitela Cathedral.
Tokyo
Hotels can be very expensive in Tokyo, but there are cheaper options in the area around Minami-Senjuu Station. These hotels are less well known to tourists, which is why the rooms are often Japanese-style.
Sao Paulo
Here you should avoid the touristy places such as Avenida Paulista. Good food can be found in small bakeries, where they serve prato feito, a dish with rice, beans, meat and salad. The portions are often generous enough to feed two people.
Oslo
You can save a lot of money in Oslo by walking. The Oslo Pass gives you free entry to many museums and sights, as well as some bus lines and ferries.
