In 2007, 7 New Wonders of the Modern World were chosen. The list is very similar to the original list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which were named by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC. The old list of Wonders of the World consisted of sites in the Mediterranean region, while the new list includes sites in South America and Asia.

 

1st Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal is located in Agra, India and was built in the middle of the 17th century. The white-domed building was built by Shah Jahan, the ruler of the Mughal Empire, as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. The tomb of the mausoleum is made of white marble and the minarets of the Taj Mahal are about 40 metres high.

One of the oldest wonders of the world is the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. The arena dates back to the 1st century BC and was built for games and gladiator fights. In its heyday, the Colosseum had a capacity of 50,000 visitors.

 

3. petra

Petra is located on Mount Hor in JordanThis stone city was built around 2000 years ago and was only rediscovered by the western world in the 19th century. Petra was originally the capital of the Nabataeans, an ancient Arab people.

 

4th Machu Pichu

Machu Pichu is an archaeological site from the 15th century, located in the Urubamba Valley in Peru. Machu Pichu belonged to the Inca Empire and is also known as the Lost Inca City. Machu Pichu lies around two and a half thousand metres above sea level and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The nearest city, Cusco, is 80 kilometres south-east of Machu Pichu.

 

5th Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is over 6000 kilometres long and was built continuously between the 5th century BC and the 16th century AD. he wall served to protect the country from invaders and stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop Nur in the west.

 

6th statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro

The 40 metre high statue of Christ with outstretched arms stands above the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The statue was built in 1931 and is made of soapstone and concrete. The statue stands on Mount Corcovado, a 700 metre high mountain in the heart of the Tijuca National Forest.

 

7. Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá is an archaeological site on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexivo. It was built by the Mayas between the 6th and 7th centuries. The name means "The Mouth of the Itza Fountain". The most important landmark of Chichén Itzá is the Kukulkan pyramid, which is around 25 metres high.
