How do I deal with my bad mood?

It is often an accumulation of many small circumstances that gradually cause the mood to sink and suddenly ensure that you can no longer see anything positive. Viewed individually, the triggers are insignificant, but when everything becomes too much, the barrel overflows.

A bad mood should not be confused with depression or depressive moods. Depression lasts for a longer period of time and must be treated by a doctor. A bad mood is like a storm of negative feelings that blows away just as quickly as it has arrived. The trick is to stay in control during the storm.

It's easy to drag other people down with you into your bad mood, because who wants to be considerate of other people's feelings when you're in such a bad mood yourself? However, you should make a conscious effort not to take your own bad mood out on others. If this does happen, you should apologise. Bad moods are just as contagious as good moods, and if you pass on your moods to others, they will do the same in return. Apologising for an unjust slip-up also greatly reduces the intensity of the bad mood. You force yourself not to worry about your own feelings for a moment.

Everyone has a bad mood, so there is no reason to despise yourself for it and make it worse. If you are overcome by a bad mood, you should treat yourself with understanding and respect, because moods are part of life and will pass.

Nevertheless, it makes sense not to simply wait out the wave, but to find out the actual cause of the bad mood. The cause often goes deeper and further back than you think. You often only learn to deal with strong mood swings once you know what has caused them.

Whatever the cause of the bad mood, it helps to put it into perspective. How bad is the problem really compared to other people's problems? You often realise that you are upset about ridiculous things while other people are really in a bad mood. This realisation may not help with the acute bad mood, but it may motivate you to do something good for someone else and feel better yourself as a result.
