Most people admire and respect strong-willed individuals who, through self-discipline and willpower, succeed in life, learn new skills, overcome difficulties, lose weight and rise high in their chosen field. The fact is that willpower is not simply innate; anyone can learn to become strong-willed.
A strong will and self-discipline are among the most important inner strengths in life, as they provide people with essential tools for success in all areas of life. Everyone can develop this willpower through self-training. Like any other skill or knowledge, a strong will can be learnt and trained.
What is a strong will
Willpower is the inner strength to make decisions, take action and complete tasks until they are achieved, no matter how unpleasant or difficult they are and regardless of the resistance you encounter along the way.
Willpower gives people the strength to overcome their "inner bastard", to resist temptations and bad habits and to work towards a goal, even if it requires effort, is unpleasant or goes against their own habits.
What is self-discipline
Self-discipline is the rejection of short-term gratification in favour of a higher goal. Short-term pleasures are given up in order to achieve a better long-term goal.
Self-discipline manifests the ability not to give up and to control thoughts and behaviour that lead to success and improvement. Self-discipline is self-control that encompasses mind, emotion and body.
Self-discipline does not mean being restricted or narrow-minded. Rather, it is the pillar of success and power. It gives inner strength and focus on a goal.
Self-discipline and willpower are just as necessary in everyday life as they are when making important decisions and life-changing strategies. You need both skills at school, at work and for tasks as well as in achieving a certain ideal of beauty, breaking bad habits, in relationships and self-realisation. In the daily battle of temptations, whether important or less important, you need self-discipline and willpower.
One of the simplest and most effective ways to train a strong will is to reject unimportant and short-term gratification. Every time you reject a temptation that promises short-term gratification, your inner will becomes stronger. With every temptation, you must learn to recognise how important, potentially harmful or unnecessary it is and consciously reject it, contrary to habit. Every "no" strengthens your self-esteem and inner strength. By consistently and constantly practising rejection, willpower grows like a muscle that is exercised daily. The stronger your willpower, the easier it will be when you need it for important and actually harmful temptations.
Exercises to strengthen the inner will
Here are some examples that you can use every day to train a strong will. Small things help to strengthen a weak will. The stronger it becomes, i.e. the easier the exercises become, the more you can concentrate on more difficult things that you consciously refrain from doing. With a systematic method, anyone can achieve complete self-control and improve their life, inner peace and satisfaction. It is important to find exercises that go against daily habits and represent a challenge.
Examples:
- Consciously give up reading the daily newspaper for a day or two
- Drink water instead of a sweet drink
- Walk up the stairs instead of taking the lift
- Get off the bus one stop before and walk the rest of the way
- Go to bed an hour earlier in the evening for a week and skip the TV film
- give up your favourite food for a day or two
The exercises are about consciously choosing the more unpleasant path. At the beginning, it should be small and unimportant things that gradually become more challenging as you succeed.
