Small "accidents" on the carpet can leave nasty odours that hang in the air for weeks if they are not removed. You can quickly get rid of urine and vomit odours with simple household products. You don't even have to resort to strong chemicals, often vinegar and soap work much better and are healthier for pets and people.

 

Removing dog urine from the carpet

Soak up fresh urine quickly with paper towels before it can penetrate too deeply into the carpet. Do not rub the area, just dab it. Rubbing can work the urine deep into the carpet fabric, making it more difficult to remove. Washing off the urine stain does not always completely eliminate the odour, so it must be cleaned and the odour neutralised at the same time.
Wipe off fresh or even dried, older stains with cold water. Urine spreads quickly in the carpet fibres and can penetrate deeply. The water helps to dilute the urine. Dab the area thoroughly again with paper towels.
Sprinkle the damp area with baking soda. If it is an area where you have to walk, you should cover it with a fresh towel. Leave the baking soda on overnight.
Mix about a quarter of a litre of clear vinegar with a litre of water and wash off the urine stain. Rinse well and dab with paper towels. Cover the carpet with a new towel and leave to dry. The vinegar smell evaporates very quickly in the air and removes the urine odour.
If necessary, spray the dry carpet with vinegar water from a spray bottle until the odour has completely disappeared.

Removing the odour of vomit from the carpet

Wipe up the vomit. Sprinkle the stain on the carpet with baking soda or salt and leave to dry. If the stain has already dried, dab it with cold water until the carpet fibres are damp. After drying, vacuum thoroughly with a hoover. Repeat the process once more.

To deodorise, you can soak the carpet in colourless lemonade, dab it dry and leave it to dry.

Removing dog odours from the air

Unpleasant odours in the air can be neutralised easily and inexpensively with homemade air freshener. To do this, mix clear vinegar with a little baking soda and water as well as a few drops of any essential oil, pour the mixture into a spray bottle and distribute it regularly around the room.
