The most important thing when removing paint stains from carpet is to start cleaning as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get the colour out.

Here are a few tips on how to remove paint stains from carpet:

Removing fresh paint

 

• React immediately. Once the paint has dried on the carpet, it becomes difficult or even impossible to remove the stain. First take some paper towels and soak up as much paint as possible with them. Only place the paper towels on the fresh paint and blot a little, do not rub, so that the paint is not rubbed even deeper into the carpet fibres.

• Now you can take a cloth and soak it with some alcohol. Continue dabbing the soaked cloth on the colour stain until no more colour is absorbed by the cloth. Be careful not to let too much alcohol penetrate the carpet fibres, otherwise they could come loose.

• Take a wet sponge and dab cold water onto the stain. Then soak up the excess water with paper towels. Add a few drops of washing-up liquid to warm water and work this onto the stain with the sponge. Then soak up the excess water again. Repeat this process until most of the paint has been removed. Now let the wet spot dry.

• Fill a water spray bottle with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen superoxide). Spray some solution on the stain without getting the carpet too wet. Blot the stain with a clean cloth until no more colour comes out of the carpet. Dab the wet spot thoroughly again with paper towels.

 

Removing dried paint

 

If the paint has already dried, it will be difficult to remove a paint stain from the carpet. A helpful method is the following:

 

• Put some lubricant (WD 40) or solvent on the stain to loosen the paint. Leave to act for about 15 minutes. Then rub the spot with a clean cloth.

• After you have brushed out as much colour as possible in this way, you can try brushing out more colour with a brush.

• Try to scrape out stubborn paint residues with a razor blade and cut off some fibres if necessary.

• Now the paint is largely removed, but you still have to remove the solvent so that it does not leave a stain on the carpet. To do this, add a fat-dissolving washing-up liquid and vinegar to some lukewarm water. Apply the mixture to the stain with a sponge and then wash the area with clean water. Soak up excess water with paper towels and let the spot dry.
