There are refrigerators that come with all kinds of extras. Some of these can save a lot of money in the long run, while others are not necessarily worth paying extra for.

 

Sensible equipment for the refrigerator

 

Refrigerators with the frost-free rating do not need to be defrosted because no ice accumulates inside. This saves a lot of energy that is lost due to accumulated layers of ice.

A refrigerator with an automatic defrost function also works much more economically because it regulates the temperature so that ice does not form.

Easy-care compartments. The compartments can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth. This means you don't need to use any cleaning agents, or the refrigerator doesn't have to be left open for so long for cleaning.

 

Less useful features of the refrigerator

 

Chilled water dispenser. It is just as easy to put bottled water in it for cooling.

Ice cube dispenser. Ice cubes can also be conveniently stored and retrieved in ice cube trays.

Egg and bottle compartment. Too much space is wasted, you can better organise bottles and eggs yourself in the fridge.

 

 

Choosing the right refrigerator

 

The choice of refrigerators is very largeß. To find out which fridge is right for you and your budget, think about what equipment you need for your household.

How much volume do you need? For an average family, a 400 litre fridge is sufficient. If there are fewer people in the household, there is no need to pay for volume you don't need.

Do you need a freezer compartment? A refrigerator with a freezer compartment is more expensive, but a freezer compartment is very practical, especially in summer. If you already have a freezer, you certainly don't need an extra freezer compartment. Especially if you buy a lot of groceries in bulk, it is worthwhile for you to have an economical freezer to freeze the groceries.

Which type are you? Do you prefer to buy fresh food or mainly frozen? The ratio between fridge volume and freezer compartment should be based on this.

 

 

Care of the freezer compartment

 

If you regularly maintain the freezer compartment or freezer, you will save money and the freezer compartment will last longer. If you do not have a frost-free freezer compartment, you should defrost the refrigerator as soon as 5mm of ice has formed. The thicker the layer of ice, the more electricity the refrigerator consumes to maintain the temperature. Never scrape off the ice with a sharp object, as this can damage the surface.

 

The freezer compartment or freezer works most economically when it is as full as possible.
