A homemade witch's broom is not only practical in the household, but also a beautiful accessory for witch costumes. A simple witch's broom consists of a roughly bound, round broom head, instead of the flat broom head of conventional household brooms, and a wooden stick.

 

The wooden stick can be a long, reasonably even branch from the forest, from which all branches have been removed and the ends trimmed.

The broom head can be made from real straws that are hard enough. Instead of straw, you can also use brushwood or sorghum. Brushwood and sorghum have rougher fibres that are hard enough to sweep up dirt and flexible enough not to break.

Soak straw, brushwood or sorghum in a bucket of lukewarm water for about 15 minutes. Soaked fibres are easier to process.
Bundle a handful of stalks together evenly and cut off the top end straight with a sharp knife. Wrap a piece of nylon cord tightly around the bundle about five centimetres from the end. Make several of these thin bundles.
Now place the first bundle of straw on the stick. The straight cut end lies on the stick.

The bundles of straw or brushwood are tied around the stick one after the other until it is completely covered at the lower end. Finally, wrap a nylon cord around all the stalks about ten times and tie them tightly together.

Once all the stalks have been tied up, the two ends are trimmed evenly with scissors. The lower end of the stalks, the one that will be swept, should form a slight semicircle.
