UV insect traps
UV insect traps attract phototaxic insects and kill them by electric shocks. Many of these insects are useful. Mosquitoes are not attracted by the light, it even helps them to find breeding sites. Every night, about 3000 useful insects are killed per insect trap, such as butterflies and moths. but only sporadically mosquitoes.
According to studies, people are bitten more often by mosquitoes with a 10% UV insect trap than without, because the mosquitoes are attracted and not killed.
It is not the light that attracts the mosquitoes. The UV light is reflected from surrounding water surfaces and polarises the reflection of the water. This means that the light reflection in the water is not blinding and the mosquitoes can see objects more clearly. This makes it easier for mosquitoes to find their preferred breeding place.
Another disadvantage is that insects, especially larger insects, are attracted to the lamp where they are electrified. The dead insect body remains right next to the light source. If the dead insects accumulate there, there is a risk of fire.
Some insects literally explode when they hit the lamp. The insect parts are scattered and often spray the people sitting next to them.
Insect sprays
Insect sprays are not only comparatively expensive, their effect only lasts about two to four hours. They kill all insects, including the beneficial ones. Mosquitoes that survive the attack with the insect spray become stronger afterwards than before and can even become completely immune to a certain pesticide in only six generations. As a result, you use more and more insecticide for the same result and pollute the environment.
Insect sprays should only be used as a last resort and as sparingly as possible.
Insect-repellent candles and incense
These effectively repel mosquitoes as long as you are within the smoked circle. However, incense candles in particular can contain pesticides that can cause health problems if inhaled. Also, the area of effect is quite small, as usually only the upper body is protected. While the aroma envelops and protects the upper body of the person, it is poked into the legs.
