Jam jars or other containers with preserves are sometimes very difficult to open, especially with slightly slippery hands.

The trick is to improve adhesion to the screw cap so that the force applied is optimised for opening the jar.

You can easily improve the adhesion with a piece of sandpaper. Place the rough side of the sandpaper on the lid and then turn it vigorously to prevent your hand from slipping.
