Rubbish bins are collection points for rotting food waste. So it's no wonder that the worst odours escape when you open the bin. To make the bin less unpleasant, you need to mask these bad odours with good ones.

Of course, you should empty the bin regularly and clean the inside. If you don't collect much rubbish, use a smaller bin liner so that you can still dispose of the rubbish as often as possible without wasting too much space and plastic bag.

Place the rubbish bin in a kitchen cupboard in which you place intensely scented air fresheners. If the air freshener no longer smells so strong, moisten it a little.
You can also dust the bottom of the bin with two teaspoons of baking powder or activated charcoal (available from aquarium shops). Baking soda and activated charcoal absorb bad odours and neutralise them. Remember to regularly dispose of the soaked powder and put out a new one.
