Windows are exposed to wind and weather and age over time. Wooden frames begin to crack, the silicone insulation of the double glazing becomes brittle and causes the glass panes to mist up in the space between them. Time to install new windows, but this can cost a lot of money.

 

New windows increase the resale value of a house enormously, but you can't always afford to buy new windows. To ensure that the thermal insulation of the house is not lost due to the broken windows, they can be repaired.

Windows with wooden frames

With good care, wooden windows will last a whole century or more. If they are neglected, they will weather in just a few years. However, even with wooden frames that have not been repainted for several years, the damage is often only superficial and can be treated.
Rotten wood can be cut out and sanded or treated with epoxy. Holes and cracks are repaired with epoxy and wood filler. The material can be lightly sanded and painted.

Special sealing strips seal larger openings in the window frame. The sealing strips are flexible and allow the wood to move while making cracks impermeable.

Larger openings that allow air to pass through and result in heat loss can be filled with assembly foam.

Windows with PVC or aluminium frames

The frames last for several decades and require little maintenance. However, the seals are much more susceptible. Seals that have become brittle can usually be removed and replaced with colourless silicone.

Important: before sealing the glass panes with silicone, they should be dry and uncoated on the inside, otherwise the moisture will be trapped there. If necessary, wait until next summer.
