Yoga exercise against high blood pressure

Hypertension is a common condition in which the arteries are overwhelmed by the pressure of blood flow. In yoga, the body is treated holistically and hypertension is treated by regulating blood flow through consistent practice of certain postures. Yoga instructors recommend the 'Reclining Hero' pose (Supta Virasana) for the targeted treatment of high blood pressure.

Supta Virasana for the treatment of high blood pressure

- Kneel on the floor and place your buttocks on the floor between your heels. Place the cushion behind the body on the floor in a vertical position with one end touching the coccyx. Place a folded towel on the other side of the cushion.

- Place your hands on the floor next to your feet, bend your elbows and bring your upper body down until it is supported by your forearms.

- Lower your whole back onto the pillow and rest your head on the towel. Press your shoulder blades onto the pillow and lift your chest.

- Bring your arms into a natural position with your palms facing upwards. Close your eyes and relax. Remain in this position for one minute.

- Press your hands on your feet and slowly raise your upper body, keeping your chest and neck relaxed. Stretch both legs out in front of your body and remain seated for one minute.

Note: If your knees cannot cope with the stretching, you can place a yoga block under your bum to minimise the stretching. If you have partially blocked arteries or chest tightness, this exercise should only be practised under supervision.
