It is particularly important to reduce the risk of stroke if you suffer from atrial fibrillation. Here are some important tips on what you can do to prevent a stroke.
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for atrial fibrillation and drastically increases the risk of a stroke. Measure your blood pressure regularly at home and check that it is not too high. If your blood pressure is above 135 over 85, you should see a doctor immediately.
Diabetics are more at risk. This risk can be reduced if blood glucose levels are controlled and well adjusted. This is particularly important for insulin-dependent diabetics. You can measure your blood sugar yourself at home or have it measured at the pharmacy.
Stay active and exercise regularly. Provided your heart rate is stable and your doctor does not specifically advise against physical activity, you should go for walks, swim or cycle a lot.
A balanced diet is the best protection against stroke. This is what you should eat: Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, little low-fat meat, low-fat dairy products, vegetable cooking oils and occasional sea fish.
If you suffer from atrial fibrillation, you should only eat foods containing vitamin K, such as cabbage, in moderation and check your blood clotting levels.
